COCOA
- The Wacky Wheelchair Races are back again to celebrate
Disability Awareness Month this month at Brevard Community
College .
Students, faculty and staff will rev their wheels at the
Cocoa, Palm Bay and Melbourne campuses. The Titusville
campus psychology classes will host disability awareness
activities Oct. 11 and 12.
Disabilities Awareness Month involves activities and materials
that increase the public’s awareness of the contributions
and skills of Americans who live with disabilities.
“People with disabilities have many challenges,
but they have a great deal to contribute to society,’’
said Dr. Lyndi Fertel, director of the college’s
disabilities office.
``We have received a grant, the purpose of which is to
encourage students with disabilities to do service learning,”
she said.
The BCC Office for Students with Disabilities serves about
700 to 800 students per year among the four BCC campuses,
Fertel added. Learning disabilities was the largest percentage
of any one disability served at the college.
However, this month’s activities are designed to
show people the challenges that are involved with managing
several different types of disabilities.
