MELBOURNE — Greater Heights, a new, affordable apartment community in Melbourne is designed for working families and senior citizens on a fixed income.
Built by the Brevard Neighborhood Development Coalition, the 18 one-to-four-bedroom units were recently completed and applications are currently being accepted for residents.
The colorful Key West-themed complex is set amidst centuries-old live oaks in Melbourne’s historic Booker T. Washington neighborhood, conveniently located just four blocks west from U.S. 1.
The apartments are across the street from the Dorcas Outreach Center for Kids, or DOCK, which provides free tutoring, enrichment activities and snacks for children and teens.
The brand-new units feature central air conditioning, appliances, porches and laundry area. Some apartments also include vaulted ceilings. Lawn service and pest control is included.
Rents range from $400 to $650, depending on apartment size and household income.
Lynn Brockwell-Carey, executive director of the Brevard Neighborhood Development Coalition, acknowledges that some prospective tenants may be hesitant to apply because of the neighborhood’s former reputation.
“They need to know that the area has changed,” said Brockwell-Carey.
“It’s become a quiet community with a strong neighborhood watch.”
Applicants must meet prequalifying criteria and income eligibility.
