Beauty tips to take good care of your hair

By Jennifer Polanco
For Al Día Today

The season of sun, sand, sea and swimming pools has arrived, and along with it dry hair.

Al Día Today

This hot, humid time of year leads to dry, dull unhealthy hair. For this reason, you need to maintain healthy hair with daily use of conditioning and moisturizing products. Remember that your hair is an essential part of your image and you need to keep it healthy and luminous.

Choose a conditioner that matches your hair type and use a hair restorer to avoid split ends. When in doubt ask your stylist which products best suit your hair.

The following are some hair care tips:

• Snip the ends every six to 8 weeks.
• Wash your hair twice with shampoo and rinse with cold water.
• Comb out your hair gently, starting from the ends, so as not to be too rough on it.
• Give it a weekly treatment to maintain protein balance and to keep it from drying out.
• During the summer months remember to get rid of chlorine and salt residue.

Summer Care

Before swimming or sunbathing, you should take preventive measures to avoid excessive hair damage. Most cosmetic companies have on the market product lines specifically designed for summer conditions. Protective sprays, shampoos and creams are available. Protective sprays are especially indicated for dyed and highlighted hair, since ocean water as well as sunshine can vary the color considerably. These products prevent such problems. Thoroughly apply it to your hair before sunbathing. You can use it even if your hair is its natural color.

Another important type of product is sun-blocking shampoo. It is lathers up like any other shampoo, and its effect is similar to the sun block you put on your skin.

If you have dyed hair it is definitely advisable that you darken it a little before going on vacation, since sun, chlorine and salt water continually lighten it. You should also avoid all long-term exposure to sunlight as much as possible. For example, you can wear a hat while sunbathing at the beach. If you have been thinking about dying your hair, put it off for a few months, because dyed hair requires extra care. Coloring dries out you hair, and continual exposure to sun and water can ruin its health.

My Grandmother’s Remedies

If your budget will not allow you to spend a lot on hair products or to go to the beauty salon, here we present some home remedies that you can put to use. Your hair will thank you for it.

Natural conditioner:

Mix the flesh of an avocado with coconut milk in a blender. Comb the mixture into your hair. Let sit for about 15 minutes and rinse. It should leave your hair super smooth.

No more dry hair:

Blend half an avocado, a spoonful of mayonnaise, one egg and two spoonfuls of sandalwood oil. Apply the mixture to your hair and let it work for 20 minutes. Wash and rinse with normal shampoo and conditioner.

Color restoration:

Apply tomato juice to your hair for 5 minutes. Rinse with generous amounts of water and shampoo.

Brilliant shine:

Mix 10 ounces of beer with ¼ cup of cider vinegar and apply to hair before conditioner. If your hair is a dark, less luminous color, such as chestnut brown, prepare a cup of very strong espresso. Let cool and apply to hair. Let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with generous amounts of water.

Treatment for damaged or dyed hair: Mix the flesh of one ripe avocado with two spoonfuls of sunflower oil and a squirt of lemon juice. Apply the mixture to your hair and let sit for 15 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with water.
