Alfonso, OB/GYN physician, takes care of his patients in Spanish and English

Doctor Elvis Alfonso examines the unborn child of Jessica Roberts at his office in Port St. John. Last fall, Parrish Medical Center tapped Alfonso for a new practice, which opened this past February.

For a while, Alfonso’s career veered away from medicine.

Although he graduated with honors from the medical program at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo and did post-graduate studies in urology in Mexico City, the Dominican Republic native eventually opted for a teaching job in New York City.

“I decided to come to New York because my parents were there,” he said.

While preparing for his board exams, he taught junior high biology for three years in the Bronx.

“It was one of the most difficult jobs I had, but also one of the most rewarding,” he said.

He must have been an excellent educator, for his students earned first place in the district science fair.

“The kids were accepted into accelerated programs in high school,” he said.

In 2003, after a stint doing diabetes prevention research at Columbia University, Alfonso entered his four-year residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Flushing Medical Center.

Last fall, Parrish Medical Center tapped him for a new practice, which opened this past February.

The bachelor physician resides in La Cita in Titusville.

He is excited about the opportunities he can offer patients visiting his new practice.

“Coming from a urological background, I can offer a different perspective to help patients,” he said.

He takes pride in providing the latest advances in diagnostic and surgery procedures, including the minimally-invasive laporoscopic surgery.

“Our office is state of the art,” he said.

At 17, Alfonso’s son, Elvis, Jr., is contemplating his own career moves. Does he plan to go into medicine?

“He doesn’t want anything to do with medicine,” said Alfonso, laughing.

“He wants to be a lawyer.”

Dr. Alfonso practices at Women’s Health of Port St. John, 5005 Port St. John Parkway. Telephone is (321) 504-1181.
