Velarde, who is board certified in general surgery with a fellowship in laporoscopy, attended medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico, and did his residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami. In September of last year, the Peruvian native established his Brevard practice.

He also specializes in weight reduction surgery using laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands, or lap bands.

“The bands are very popular because it’s a safer procedure than a by-pass,” said Velarde.

“The risks of complications are very low. It’s probably even safer than taking a gall bladder out.”

Performed as outpatient surgery, the procedure involves placing a silicone band around the top part of the stomach.

“It restricts your intake and increases your satiety so you don’t feel hungry,” said Velarde.

The procedure is intended for morbidly obese individuals.

Velarde believes more aggressive public education about the problems of obesity is necessary.

“Obesity is a disease, but a lot of people don’t see it like that,” he said.

“The problem is that people see obesity as normal. Obesity is a huge problem that has a direct connection to heart disease, stroke, infertility, you name it. It affects head to toe.”

Velarde practices what he preaches, enjoying sports whenever his busy schedule permits.

“I love being outdoors,” said the physician, who in years past often competed in surfing events.”

Dr. Diego Velarde, who is bilingual in Spanish and English, welcomes new patients at his practice, located at 6100 Minton Rd. in Palm Bay. Telephone is 309-5100.
