Tax Preparation Classes Available
Brevard County, FL – As part of their focus on increasing
participation in the Earned Income Tax Credit program,
United Way of Brevard is in need of volunteers to help
provide free tax preparation and financial education to
residents of Brevard County. No previous experience is
required. Training will be provided.
In partnership with the IRS, AARP Tax Aide, Family Counseling
Center, Consumer Credit Counseling, the Brevard Workforce
Development Board, The Economic Development Commission
of Florida’s Space Coast and others, United Way
of Brevard will be providing free tax preparation and
financial counseling during the 2007 tax season. The first
FREE tax preparation class will be offered on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday, November 6-17 from 9:00 a.m. –
1:00 p.m. at the Job Link office located in Byrd Plaza
at 801 Dixon Blvd. Cocoa. The course will provide training
that will allow attendees to become IRS certified after
completion of the full class and successfully passing
the post-course test. Volunteers will then be scheduled
to help at one of the free tax preparation sites.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is the nation’s
largest and most powerful anti-poverty program –
larger than the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
(TANF) and Food
Stamp Programs combined. Since it was enacted in 1975,
it has helped tens of millions of Americans make the transition
from public assistance to economic independence. Last
year alone more than 22 million individuals received the
tax credit, returning $38 billion in income to low-wage
workers. United Way hopes to increase participation in
the program to benefit low-wage earners in Brevard County.
